When I came out of hospital and went back to the community, everyone said things like, OK, wow, oh right, oh, she’s not going to die, we thought she was dead, she ended up in a chair, and now, like stereotypes…
We hear people say people are normally cursed when these things happen, somebody wants you dead…
It affected me a lot because all I needed was just support, but luckily my father quickly picked it up and he also ended up getting everybody on board, that they’re supposed to try their utmost to make me feel comfortable, so, eventually, my family came to the party and they’re still there today.
But I still do notice in the communities, it makes life very difficult because there are challenges getting out of the house, because it is like a taboo for somebody on a wheelchair to be going up and down outside. Apparently, you’re supposed to be indoors, locking yourself in. If you are going around outside, moving alone, you’re being asked where are you going alone.
